Potential Hate Crime Committed Against Same-Sex Couple in Myrtle Beach

In Myrtle Beach, a same-sex couple spent some free time at BK Whopper Bar and ended up in a fight with a man they had never seen before. The couple was kissing in the restaurant when the man decided to confront them about what they were doing.

Jordan Schaeffer, age 25, and Eric Danko, age 25, were at the 1101 Washington Avenue restaurant during the early morning hours. The man approached them and slung derogatory words and hate speech their way. The man used the “F-word” used as a homophobic slur toward gay men.

According to Ernesto Rodriguez, a Myrtle Beach police spokesman, “Myrtle Beach and all across the country there is just no place for hate. Everybody should be able to be here and express themselves freely.”

Surveillance video in the area shows three men and the couple engaging in a fight. There were several bystanders around when the incident occurred. Some tried to separate the men while others just stood by and watched the fight go down.

According to police, after the men left Whopper Bar, Danko chased after them. About a block away, this resulted in another fight breaking out between the couple and the men.

The police station is also directly across the street from the restaurant. A report made by the police states that an officer saw Danko walking amongst traffic in the middle of the road on Washington Ave. He was heading north at the time.

When the officer approached him, he refused to follow the simple commands from the officer, which included telling him to step out of the street. The report also states that he seemed to be heavily inebriated.

Schaeffer eventually told police what happened, but was uncooperative at first per reports. Both men suffered minor injuries to their faces and were treated at the scene.

“You never know when something will happen that can leave someone injured for no good reason. In these instances, the primary goal is recovery, but one should not wait long to determine personal injury claims either,” stated Myrtle Beach personal injury lawyers Joe and Martin. “It is important that the victim of a hate crime know their rights and know that they do have a voice in the matter. They will need an attorney who cares about their overall well-being, as well as helping them to get justice for such a heinous act.”

Myrtle Beach Beach police are working to identify those who got into a fight with the same-sex couple. They are encouraging any witnesses who might have information to contact Myrtle Beach Crime Stoppers.

Others in the area are shocked about the incident and feel that in this day and age, things like this should never happen.

“There are a lot of people in the world and if they’re afraid to get out and see then maybe they should stay and not even go to Burger King,” states tourist Mark Myer.
